The Tank

Cisternen – The Tank is a disused oil tank with a 25 second reverb, situated on the island Svanö in Northern Sweden, that has been transformed into an experimental venue for sound art and performance.

A three hour live improvised sound art installation. The Tank, situated in the middle of the river Ångermanälven, was filled with different kind of water sounds. Objects and instruments played in water, using hydrophones for registering the smallest of movements in the water bodies, combined with recorded sounds from the nearby river. Lee Berwick (electronics), Mikael Öberg (percussion), Björn Ola Lind (sound sculpture, voice), Daniel Nilsson (water music).

A windharp was built on the roof of the tank. 7 strings played by the wind was transmitted into the inside of the tank and 7 musicians improvised 7 different pieces of music to an audience who was lying down on the floor. Each piece of music was also inspired of the energy of 7 different wind goddesses and gods.

Lee Berwick (electronics), Maria Bervelius (voice), Mikael Öberg (percussion), Björn Ola Lind (voice, percussion), Output Arts (harp builders), Daniel Nilsson (saxophone).

In 2008 and 2009 cross-arts festivals were organized at the tank. The 2009 festival had 33 participating artists in a wide variety of expressions: performance art, theatre, butoh, sound art, as well as traditional music and performance acts from Greenland, Sápmi and East Africa.
